International or local Thai school? What are the benefits of international schools in Thailand?

Are international school fees in Bangkok keeping you awake at night? Are you considering the local system? Wondering what the differences are between the two options?

If you’re an expat parent in Bangkok, entering the international or local school in Bangkok debate is inevitable. “Where do your kids go to school?” is usually one of the top questions asked here, that’s why we put together a list for all the best international schools in Bangkok for you.

Here are the pros, cons of a Thai school and international school in Bangkok.

International or local Thai school? What are the benefits of international schools in Thailand?

Choose the system that’s best for your child

There is never a simple answer.

Some families arrive in Thailand fully intending to enrol their children into an international school, only to later realise the fees are eye-watering, competition for places can be intense and the school run across Bangkok traffic might slowly destroy their sanity. Others start off considering local Thai schools but worry about language barriers, academic pressure or whether their child will adapt socially.

Both options can work brilliantly depending on your child, your budget, your long-term plans and the kind of upbringing you want for your family in Thailand.

Because despite what some people might tell you in expat circles, there is no universally “better” choice. It really depends on what your child needs.

For many expat families, international schools offer familiarity and flexibility.

Most international schools in Bangkok teach in English and follow globally recognised curriculums such as IB, British or American systems. This makes transitions easier for families who may relocate again in the future, especially if children are moving between countries regularly.

International schools also tend to place strong emphasis on extracurricular activities, creativity, sports and inquiry-based learning. Depending on the school, classrooms may feel less rigid and more discussion-based compared to traditional Asian education systems.

Another major advantage is diversity. In many Bangkok international schools, students come from dozens of nationalities, creating a very international environment where children grow up surrounded by different cultures and perspectives.

Facilities are often another big draw. Swimming pools, theatres, science labs, sports fields, maker spaces and specialised learning support are increasingly common in larger schools across Bangkok.

And for parents new to Thailand, international schools can also become a community hub. Many expat friendships begin through school events, WhatsApp groups and weekend birthday parties.

But international schools in Bangkok come at a cost

And it’s a big one.

International school fees in Bangkok can easily range from around B300,000 to over B1 million per year once registration fees, deposits, uniforms, transport and extras are included.

For families with multiple children, this quickly becomes one of the largest household expenses.

Some parents also feel that international schools can create an “expat bubble,” where children become somewhat disconnected from Thai language and local culture despite living in Thailand.

Depending on the school, there can also be enormous differences in quality. Just because a school calls itself “international” does not automatically mean it offers the same standards, facilities or teaching approach as the top-tier schools in Bangkok.

What about local Thai schools?

Local Thai schools are often overlooked by expat families, but they can offer huge advantages, especially for younger children or families planning to stay in Thailand long term.

The most obvious benefit is affordability. Even top bilingual or private Thai schools are often significantly cheaper than international schools.

But beyond cost, local schools can offer something many international schools cannot: deep cultural integration.

Children who attend Thai schools often become fluent in Thai much faster, build stronger connections with local culture and develop friendships outside the expat community. For mixed-nationality families or parents who want their children to feel genuinely rooted in Thailand, this can be incredibly valuable.

Some Thai schools – particularly bilingual and private programmes – also offer very strong academics with increasing international exposure.

And contrary to outdated stereotypes, many modern Thai schools now have impressive facilities, English-language programmes and internationally trained teachers.

The challenges of Thai schools

Of course, local schools may not suit every child or family.

Language can be a major adjustment, especially for older children entering the Thai system for the first time. Teaching styles may also feel more traditional, with greater focus on discipline, memorisation and exam performance depending on the school.

Parents unfamiliar with Thai language and culture may sometimes find communication more difficult too, especially in fully Thai-speaking environments.

And if your family plans to relocate frequently between countries, transitioning between education systems may require additional adjustment later on.

So which option is better?

Honestly, neither. And both.

Bangkok has families thriving in every type of school environment imaginable: elite international schools, bilingual schools, alternative schools, local Thai schools and homeschooling communities.

Some children flourish in highly academic environments. Others need smaller classrooms, more creativity or stronger emotional support. Some families prioritise global mobility. Others want cultural immersion and affordability.

The best school is rarely the one with the biggest campus or the most expensive tuition fees. It’s the one that fits your child, your family values and the life you actually want to build in Thailand.

And if there’s one thing most Bangkok parents eventually learn, it’s this: every family ends up figuring out their own version of what works.
